What they say: Hailed as the worst film of all time, Ed Woods cult classic Plan 9 From Outer Space is one of the most hilariously entertaining movies you will ever see. Aliens fear the human race will develop a deadly ‘solaranite bomb.’ After eight failed attempts, Plan 9 is their scheme to reanimate earth s dead to build a zombie army and stop the earthlings from destroying the universe. With string powered flying saucers, twisted alien logic and ‘priceless’ special effects, it is a movie mission destined for success, or not!
Plan 9 is a movie so beautifully bad, it is great! And it is now finally available on Blu-ray Disc!
What I say: If someone were to have asked me; “What do you think the last movie to be released on Blu-Ray would be?” I would have said Nekromantik, but my second choice would have been Plan 9 from Outer Space. There is a reason it is called “The worst movie of all time”, it is horribly written, acted and directed. But it’s so bad it’s good. As comedy it is sublime. Ed Wood was a silly man and that definitely shows on screen.
But the true star of this disc is the restoration and colorization of the film. This is certainly the best I have ever seen Plan 9 look, and the color is unbelievable! The only gripe I have about this version is that the new color hides some of the films hilarious flaws such as the strings on the flying saucers. That is part of the charm of the film. The black and white version is really strong as well is looks fabulous as well.
There are some odd extras like Ed Wood home movies and commercials. Mike Nelson provides a commentary. If you love Plan 9 I dare say this is the best version this film will ever receive.
