detective dee blu

What they say: A bizarre murder mystery brings together the most powerful woman in china the soon-to-be-empress wu zetian and a formerly exiled detective dee renjie at the infamous imperial palace. Hoping he will solve the crime before her coronation.

What I say: I have been watching quite a bit of Asian cinema here of late, and I have found most of it pretty enjoyable. But Detective Dee operates on an entire other level. Everything about this film screams epic, from the opening credits to the ending.

The film opens right in the middle of the central mystery. The main characters are introduced, and the wonderful mystery unfolds before your eyes. The writing is top notch as the mystery is like a puzzle that you are putting together along with Detective Dee. Dee himself is a great character (He is often referred to as the Asian Sherlock Holmes).

And of course Tsui Hark is no stranger to action films, but here he is coupled with a fantastic script, excellent performances from the entire cast, a beautiful score, and breathtaking cinematography. This film was on a whole new level for him.

The entire Blu-Ray package was stunning with excellent picture quality, and the 5.1 DTS MA HD track was very impressive with sound effects whipping all around you. Great job all around.

Now I’m sure it seems like I’m just gushing here, well it’s because I am. I absolutely LOVED this film. If you have not seen this, DO SO NOW!

Film: 10/10
Blu-Ray: 10/10
