What they say: A psychotic serial killer on the loose in the woods crosses paths with a group of unsuspecting teenagers. Soon people are dying one by one… but the bad guy isn’t who you think. Turning genre conventions on their head with a smart script and plenty of unexpected scares, Rabies is a surprising debut worthy of its mantle as Israel’s first-ever slasher horror film.

What I say: Rabies has got a lot of press based on the face that it’s the first horror film from Israel. But how does it stand up on its own? It’s a very different beast. Imagine if you will an ensemble horror film with several intertwining story lines.

rabies 1

There are at least five sets of characters and stories going and they crash head on into each other here and there. What is ingenious about the film is the skill it took to keep it all straight and keep it witty, scary, and fun. At the end of the day it is a slasher film, but at least it tries to be more as well. The cast is all great and the direction is bold. The thing I thought was cool about the film is how genre conventions are turned right on their ears. I mean the whole thing takes place in the daytime.

rabies 2

If you are looking for something different in your horror films, Rabies should be right up your alley.

Playing For Keeps: Drama DVD Review

playing for keeps

What they say: Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid star in “Playing For Keeps,” a romantic comedy about a charming, down-on-his luck former soccer star (Butler) who returns home to put his life back together. Looking for a way to rebuild his relationship with his son, he gets roped into coaching the boy’s soccer team. But his attempts to finally become an “adult” are met with hilarious challenges from the attractive “soccer moms” who pursue him at every turn.

What I say: Ok, before we begin, I have a question. Is every Hollywood screenwriter a deadbeat dad and general douche bag? This isn’t rhetorical, I really want to know. I know this is spoilers, but why is it that in every movie that features a divorced couple with a deadbeat dad that suddenly wants to make things right, that the poor bastard (aka the new boyfriend) that surely got punished for dating a screwed over and hurt woman gets kicked to the curb for the douche? Whose fantasy is this? Oh yeah, the scumbags fantasy. The original title for this dreck was Playing The Field, way to stay classy guys.

I know I'm a deadbeat but that's ok, you like it...

I know I’m a deadbeat but that’s ok, you like it…

Gerald Butler plays Gerald Butler, known as George in this film, a former soccer player that has fallen on hard times. He has moved to Virginia in order to be with his son, but let’s be honest, it’s really to try to steal his wife back from the real man that stuck around when he was fucking off. Meanwhile, he takes over as the soccer coach for his son’s team. Naturally, being Gerald Butler, all the moms try to seduce him. He also attracts the attention of another scumbag played by Dennis Quaid. The movie should have been called Playing With Scumbags. Anyway, George drams of being a sportscaster and oh hell, who cares.

playing for keeps 2

As usual for this kind of tripe the women are all penis crazy and throw themselves at our “hero”. Man, do women really like this shit? I guess they do as this stuff keeps getting made. This script was probably a mad libs script all they had to do will fill in the names and careers. Sheesh. Performances were fine based on what they had to work with.

Now, I know I’m not the target audience for this stuff, but c’mon us guys have to sit through this stuff sometimes, throw us a bone and don’t be so damn insulting.

nobody gets out alive dvd

What they say: Hunter Isth has his life turned upside down when his young daughter is killed by a drunk teenage driver. In mourning, depressed and angry, Hunter disappears and is rumored to have moved away from Braiden Woods. As years go by, Hunter and his devastating story evolve into a myth, a myth that many consider to be just that, until a group of partying teenagers are brutally murdered one by one.

What I say: First, let me say, there is no self respecting director that would refer to his own film as a “flick”. What a jackass. This prick, Jason Christopher, has also taken to posting on Amazon and other places saying how great the movie is. Spoiler…he’s lying.

nobody gets out alive

Described as a “homage” to horror films of the 70’s and 80’s. A carbon copy rip-off would be more accurate. Hunter Isth (WTF kind of name is that?) lost his daughter to a teenage drunk driver. He disappears then years later drunk teens start getting killed. The teens are all dumb as bags of hair, especially the girls. Because everybody knows girls are dumb right? How does schlock like this get made, let alone funded. Meanwhile there are good horror films sitting on a shelf somewhere unreleased. There is simply no justice in this world.

I mean the film isn’t out and out worthless, but it does so much wrong that what little is done right is drowned right out. Seriously, there are many many much better films out there that are more worthy of your precious time.

Urban Trial Freestyle: PS3 Game Review

Publisher/Developer: Tate Interactive

urban trial freestyle feat

What they say: Urban Trial Freestyle™ challenges players to push their risk-taking to the absolute limits to deliver maximum stunt rewards. The game`s nonstop action is complemented by a host of features including trophies, multiple game modes, leader boards, rider and bike customisation, and much more.

With slick urban detailed graphics and an innovative physics engine fine-tuned for fun pick-up and play, the game has been specifically engineered to get the most out of each platform.

Urban Trial Freestyle™ has been greatly influenced with the support of Julien Dupont, the “godfather of urban trial freestyle.” Julien is known around the world for his unique street style and technique, mashing down barriers and setting new records.

What I say: That *ahem* other game system has enjoyed having a Trials game for quite some time. So with the release of Urban Trail Freestyle from Tate Interactive, I was looking forward to finally trying out this game genre.

urban trial freestyle 1

In this game you are riding a motorbike through different environments doing stunts and traversing often perilous terrain. The controls are pretty simple, X accelerates, square decelerates and reverse, and you use the right stick to do tricks and balance your bike. Easy to pick up but it can be difficult to master. But with a little practice you will be whipping out tricks like you are a pro.

urban trial freestyle 2

There are two types of game modes; Time Trial and Stunt. Time Trial should be obvious as you try to best your times and times of ghosts. These ghosts are either of your best times or from online leaderboards. Stunt is all about getting through the track as flashy as you possibly can, popping off stunts and dodging environmental hazards. Both modes are pretty fun and you will often be facing a track in both modes.

urban trial freestyle 3

The only real downside to the game is its length, as it can be pretty short to blow through all the levels, but there is some replay value in trying to beat your times and get more stars on each level. You can also customize your bike and your avatar. These upgrades are not just cosmetic as they can really affect the performance of your bike and can make doing tricks easier.

urban trial freestyle 4

The game is pretty fun and the environments are pretty awesome. You never know what will happen as you start a level for the first time. This game is pretty fun and definitely makes us see how cool the Trials concept really is.
